Zoey Ying, Data Analyst, Partnership HealthPlan
Zoey Ying (MIMS ’25) spent the summer as a Data Analyst at Partnership HealthPlan.
Describe a typical day at your internship.
I would do some data cleaning, meet with colleagues, discuss problems I found in the data or discuss key performance indicators (KPIs) with stakeholders, and then design my dashboard.
What was the most valuable thing you learned at your internship?
For me, it was how to design KPIs for the stakeholders and how to make the data understandable for non-technical stakeholders.
What was the biggest challenge?
I would say it was learning about the healthcare industry. This industry was new to me. I didn’t have any experience and knew nothing about it. So I spent a couple of weeks learning about the industry and understanding the data tables.
How did the I School help you with this role?
I got this internship because of the I School Career Services! Career Services posted this job opportunity in our Slack channel in April, at a time when I had almost given up applying for internships, but I still submitted my resume. Luckily I got the offer!
Any advice for first-year MIMS students as they prepare for their internships?
Prepare your resumes and interviews as early as possible, apply to any positions that you see, and don’t give up, even at the last minute!
Did your internship influence your career plans after graduation?
Yes! I never thought about working in a non-profit healthcare company before, but this internship expanded my experience and knowledge about the industry. Non-profit organizations are good; the healthcare industry has lots of data to analyze; and most importantly, a data analyst or a data scientist can make a huge impact in this industry. I think the mission of PHC aligns with my career goals, so I will definitely consider this industry after graduation.
