10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Join I School master's students at the MeLo Hackathon, a chance to see what cool and interesting things you can create using the API for their master's final project, Meaningful Ontology of Location.

It's Friday, April 23 from 10:00am to 4:00pm. During that time they'll provide tools, short learning talks, and lunch.

RSVP

There is limited space available. If you're interested in attending, email ryan@ischool.berkeley.edu to RSVP.

What is this?

A hackathon is an event where you get together and try to make something in a limited amount of time. The students have developed an API that provides a way to access users' location histories, personal names for places, and rules for sharing this information. To test the API, they're inviting you to come build something interesting on top of this API with their help. You'll end up with a cool product and help them test their system.

Who should come?

If these things describe you, then maybe you should.

  • You're interested in geolocation and web technology
  • Want practice building interactive prototypes
  • Would like to build something cool in 3-5 hours.

What's in it for me?

The students will be giving some mini-lectures on topics related to the project that might help you in other work. Topics will include:

  • Prototyping with jQuery
  • Google Maps API v3
  • How to use OAuth
  • Cross-domain JavaScript

They'll provide lunch, sample code, and some starter ideas.

If you'd like a chance to develop your skills and learn about geo, plan to join them. Take a break from the end-of-semester craziness and get warm fuzzies by helping them test their final project.
