The American Society for Information Science and Technology recently honored Vivien Petras (PhD '06) with their ProQuest Doctoral Dissertation Award. Her dissertation, "Translating Dialects in Search: Mapping between Specialized Languages of Discourse and Documentary Languages," explains how specialized communities develop different ways of using words and how subject searching could accommodate these differences.
The purpose of the ProQuest Doctoral Dissertation Award is to recognize outstanding recent doctoral candidates whose research contributes significantly to an understanding of some aspect of information science. For a complete description of the award, see the ASIS&T website.
