I School Dean AnnaLee Saxenian recently returned from a visit to Kyoto University, Japan, where she spoke at an international symposium and met with partners from the university.
Kyoto University is one of Asia's leading research universities and the second-oldest university in Japan. The School of Information has a partnership with Kyoto's Graduate School of Informatics, and the two often exchange visiting scholars. Saxenian's visit helped strengthen the personal and academic ties between the two schools.
On February 27 in Tokyo, the university's Global Center of Excellence hosted a symposium on "Exploring New Frontiers of Informatics and Cultivation of Human Resources", where Saxenian delivered an invited lecture on "Schools of Information: A New Frontier in Informatics."
While in Kyoto, Saxenian also met with a number of UC Berkeley and I School alumni, including US Consul General Edward Dong, a UC Berkeley alumnus (BA Political Science & Asian Studies '72 , MA Asian Studies and JD Law '77); his wife, Linda Nakamura, an alumna of the then School of Library and Information Studies ('78) and the Haas School of Business ('79); Professor Yoshinori Hara, Kyoto University; Professor Izumi Ohzawa, Osaka University, also a UC Berkeley alumnus (Ph.D. '86); and Dr. Kazusue Konoike (M.S. '75 Civil Engineering), president of UC Berkeley's Japan Alumni Club.
