Assistant professor Deirdre Mulligan has been named new chair of the board of directors of the Center for Democracy and Technology, the center announced last week.
The Center for Democracy and Technology is a non-profit public interest organization working to keep the Internet open, innovative, and free. As a civil liberties group with expertise in law, technology, and policy, CDT works to enhance free expression and privacy in communications technologies by finding practical and innovative solutions to public policy challenges while protecting civil liberties.
Professor Mulligan’s research focuses on information privacy and security. Current projects include qualitative interviews to understand the institutionalization and management of privacy within corporate America, and role of law in corporate information security policy and practice. Other areas of current research include digital rights management technology and privacy, security issues in sensor networks and visual surveillance systems, and alternative legal strategies to advance network security.
Before joining the I School faculty, Mulligan was the founding director of the Berkeley School of Law’s Samuelson Clinic, which she led from 2001 to 2008. Prior to 2001, she was staff counsel at the Center for Democracy & Technology. Mulligan is also a faculty director of the Berkeley Center for Law and Technology.
