Deirdre Mulligan is speaking today at a symposium on privacy policy and innovation sponsored by the U.S. Department of Commerce's Internet Policy Task Force. The task force is conducting a "comprehensive review of the nexus between privacy policy, copyright, global free flow of information, cybersecurity, and innovation in the Internet economy."
Today's symposium is exploring the balance between protecting privacy and encouraging innovation. Speakers include U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke, as well, and experts from industry, academia, and government.
Deirdre Mulligan is an assistant professor in the School of Information and an expert on information law and policy. She is particularly interested in surveillance and privacy policy and the ways that embedded technologies influence governmental and institutional expectations and policies.
Mulligan is participating in a panel on "Privacy on the Ground," which will focus on U.S. and international privacy protections and enforcement in practice and how the U.S. legal system can influence privacy protection in the private sector and abroad.
