MIMS Final Project 2023

Reignite: A Nonprofit for All Nonprofits

According to the National Association of Nonprofit Organizations & Executives (NANOE), there are currently about 1.5 million registered tax-exempt nonprofits in the United States. Approximately 30% of nonprofit organizations (450,000) cease to exist after 10 years. Studies show that nonprofit organizations that make it past the 10-year mark do so because of their high social capital. This project aims to determine key factors that may improve a nonprofit’s social capital to help new small-scale nonprofit organizations establish meaningful relationships with both existing and future donors. The intent of this project is to make recommendations to nonprofit organizations looking to increase their funding sources by understanding the reasons individuals may or may not donate to nonprofits. This will help identify an individual's motivations for donating that can be used to increase community engagement and therefore social capital. The recommendations we distill will be tailored toward smaller-scale nonprofits looking to maximize the number of donors and donation quantity.
