Director of Admissions & Student Affairs

The University of California, Berkeley is the preeminent public university in the country. We're also one of the leading employers in the San Francisco Bay Area. We are currently seeking a Director of Student Affairs for the School of Information (I School).

The Director of Student Affairs oversees the entire range of student services, from recruitment through placement. The Director provides strategic leadership, analyzes programs and services, recommends policy changes or process improvements, and manages the student affairs enterprise. The candidate directly delivers services in the areas of recruitment and admissions, and handles student grievances and similarly significant personal issues. The Director is responsible for ensuring that the I School attracts and retains a full complement of exceptionally qualified masters and doctoral students, thereby contributing to the school's international stature. The Director supports the internship needs and post-graduate employment interests of I School masters students.

The Director has primary responsibility for developing an overall recruitment strategy for the school, taking into account the Dean's vision, campus expectations, and the competitive position of the school nationally and internationally. The Director is also responsible for managing all recruitment, admissions, and financial aid activities against the strategic goals. Similarly, the Director has primary responsibility for developing and implementing a strategic plan for the school's career services.

Responsibilities:

Recruitment and Admissions
  • Develop the school's strategic recruitment plans (MIMS and PhD)
  • Implement recruitment and outreach programs
  • Develop print and electronic recruitment materials, congruent with the school's overall image strategy, designed to promote inquiries, increase applications, and improve yield
  • Manage the admissions programs
  • Serve on the MIMS and PhD admissions committees
  • Review applications and recommend candidates for admission or further consideration by the committees
  • Develop, implement, and enhance programs to improve yield rates among top candidates
  • Manage the school's fellowship program
  • Develop and maintain effective professional relationships
  • Analyze and periodically report progress toward recruitment goals
Advising and Counseling
  • Design and implement an orientation program for new students
  • Conceptualize and oversee the academic advising program and support services
  • Advocate for the students with campus departments and school administration
  • Partner with the Associate Dean to address and resolve intricate student issues and grievances
  • Design a strategic plan to address students' post-graduate placement needs, for both MIMS and PhD students
Instructional Services
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive annual curricular plan, consonant with faculty priorities and decisions
  • Supervise the preparation of each semester's course schedule
  • Serve on the MIMS and/or PhD program committees as requested
  • Supervise the implementation of all proposed revisions to courses and/or to program requirements
Administration
  • Supervise two FTE staff
  • Manage the student affairs budget, including fellowship funds

Requirements:

  • A Bachelor's is required, with a Master's in Higher Education Administration or a related field preferred
  • A minimum of three years of related professional experience is required, with a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience preferred
  • Strong customer service and teamwork skills
  • Proven managerial, administrative, and promotional experience in at least two primary areas of responsibility including student recruitment, graduate admissions, student advising, or career placement
  • Familiarity with the complex environment of a major research university expected
  • Proficiency required in standard office software, such as email, word processing, and spreadsheets with additional proficiencies in relational databases and web editing tools preferred
  • Skills in the facilitation of mediation, conflict resolution, and crisis management
  • Knowledge of Information Management or related fields and familiarity with the UC system expected. Preferred strong aptitude and experience with statistical analysis and reporting

The annual salary range for this position is $46,452-$65,448, depending on experience and qualifications; may be higher for exceptionally qualified and experienced candidates.
