Description
The College of Engineering Master of Engineering (MEng) program is looking for 1-3 more advanced graduate students to join our teaching team of 10 GSIs next year. Our GSIs come from a variety of disciplines; we are looking for motivated candidates to provide feedback and mentoring to future engineering leaders developing technology that will have a commercial and/or societal impact. The focus is on building strong communication skills (presentation and writing) for future engineering leaders.
The job requires leading breakout sessions and providing in-class support for ENGIN 295: Communications for Engineering Leaders, a 10-week course each semester. GSIs also extensive feedback on students' presentations, writing, and discussions. The job will also require working closely with the course lecturer(s) to structure and teach effective rhetorical skills.
Course: ENGIN 295 (1 unit Fall and Spring): Communication for Engineering Leaders
M.Eng. Technical Communications course, covering presentation skills, writing skills, and team dynamics using the technical capstone project as a foundation for assignments.
Required Qualifications:
- Available for a 50% GSI appointment and spring 2019, and/or a yearlong commitment in 2019-20
- Past experience as a GSI or teaching assistant
- Able to model and teach effective verbal and written communication
- Excellent organizational skills
- Desire to work with an internationally diverse groups of masters students
- Interest in management, leadership and teamwork topics
Preferred Qualifications:
- Technical background
- Formal education or experience in communications, rhetoric, or verbal leadership
- ABD (all but dissertation) PhD candidates with a flexible schedule; we also hire excellent 2nd year masters students.
