About the FCC: The FCC establishes policies and enforces laws and regulations related to wired and wireless communications to serve the national defense, promote public safety of life and property, and make communications services available at reasonable charges. In doing so, we rely on vast amounts of data and the analytic expertise of our talented staff.
About the position: Formally established in December 2018, the Data Division was created within the new Office of Economics and Analysis and is charged with developing policies and strategies to help manage the FCC’s data resources and establish best practices for data use throughout the FCC. To accomplish this, we will need to institutionalize the diffuse knowledge we have about the data that we are responsible for managing: What analytical data do we have? Where does it live and how is it accessed? What condition is it in? How does the data align with its intended purpose? Are we maximizing the use of our data in our economic and analytic analyses? Do we have the right tools to analyze the data? Do we have the right skills to make the most out of the data? Are we asking the right questions of our data?
Interns will work to assist in the planning, development, and execution of the FCC’s new Data Directory to maximize outcomes for the Office of Economics and Analysis and the agency at large. This could involve the following:
- Identification and classification of the different types of mission-critical data used at the FCC.
- Establishing a set of metadata essential for the effective management of diverse datasets.
- Identification of quid pro quo opportunities for metadata collection from data owners and delivering value to those end-users (analyses and reports for stakeholders).
- Directed research into the legal authority for and use of specific data assets.
- Assessment of data quality and the business processes required to improve and use the data.
- Assessment of the legal, privacy and confidentiality requirements of datasets.
- Evaluation of the IT systems that manage data and information
- Identification of opportunities for linkages and connection between datasets.
- Identification of opportunities for data de-duplication and data quality improvement.
- Assisting in the creation of a “Data Issues” intake mechanism.
