Description

The University of Alabama seeks an energetic and innovative librarian to oversee the management of Access Services in Gorgas Library and the University Libraries Annex. The Coordinator leads, shapes, and oversees the work of faculty and staff engaged in circulation, Interlibrary Loan, document delivery, e-reserves, equipment checkout, technology use and training, and stacks maintenance in the main library and in the Annex. The candidate will oversee setting and assessing strategic directions for these areas. The position reports to the Senior Associate Dean. The incumbent will collaborate with the Director for Branch Library Services who oversees access services in the branches. The position is responsible for managing, hiring, and evaluating faculty members and staff. We are seeking a candidate who has significant supervisory and management experience, both with faculty and staff, as well as with managing projects. This position oversees the day to day management of the area but also develops strategic initiatives for efficient and effective services to faculty, staff, and students across the University Libraries.

The University of Alabama Libraries is engaged as a beta partner on the FOLIO project. The Coordinator will work as part of the FOLIO Implementation Team as modules are developed and tested. University Libraries currently is a Voyager site and uses Ebsco Discovery Services as its discovery layer.

The University Libraries is a member of regional and national organizations developing policies for shared storage, lending, and borrowing of collections. These include RapidILL, ASERL Scholar’s Trust, the Rosemont Shared Print Alliance, and the Center for Research Libraries. The incumbent will engage in discussions and develop plans for involvement in these and other initiatives that address library strategies and needs for collection development and lending in the 21st century. Current plans call for the expansion of the Annex facility. The incumbent will play an integral role in carrying out plans for the new Annex facility in collaboration with key administrators.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Assess costs and methods for materials delivery and management and circulation.
  • Supervision of faculty and staff in the area, including evaluation and hiring.
  • Provide oversight for all ILL and document delivery services, including RapidILL, Reprints Desk, OCLC, and other state, regional, and national projects.
  • Provide oversight for the Annex, the University’s offsite storage facility.
  • Develop and assess directions for shared resources and collaborative lending and borrowing that align with the University Libraries strategic plan and priorities.
  • Knowledge of copyright.
  • Ensure responsive and high-quality services to meet the needs of the campus.
  • Collaborate with other areas within the University Libraries to provide accurate holdings for materials.
  • Collaborate with state and regional institutions on projects related to access services and storage initiatives
  • Implementing innovative programs and services for delivery and management of resources in the University Libraries.
  • Overseeing implementation and training for new technologies associated with the area such as 3D printing and 3D scanning.
  • Assessment of collection use, borrowing and lending trends, and other key indicators that demonstrate value of the collections and stewardship of resources and space.

Required:

The following degree and experience combinations will be considered:

  • Master’s degree in Library & Information Sciences from an ALA accredited institution
  • At least two years post graduate degree experience in an academic or research library.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Experience using ILS systems, particularly circulation, reserves, and ILL.
  • Record of successful management and development of staff.
  • Record of successful collaboration in an organization.
  • Experience with creating and assessing reports in systems such as Voyager, RapidILL, and other resource sharing systems.
  • Experience using assessment and reporting software, such as LibInsights, SQL, or MS Access.
  • Experience with Learning Management Systems such as Blackboard Learn, as well as associated widgets and plugins.
  • Knowledge of developing trends in shared print, fulfillment, technologies for these efforts, and assessment of these efforts.
  • Knowledge of reference/instructional services in an academic library setting and trends and services in academic libraries to support undergraduate and graduate education.
  • Ability to successfully initiate, track, and manage projects.
  • Excellent communications skills, both verbal and written, along with skills associated with listening, negotiating, compromising, and adapting.
  • Proven interpersonal skills evidenced by the ability to work cooperatively and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, faculty, staff, and students.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member to solve problems, using sound judgment in decision-making according to an established timeframe.
  • Level of comfort with ambiguity.
  • Experience working in dynamic environments where new services are tested, evaluated, and adapted.
  • Friendly, approachable, public service attitude.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to new standards and technologies.
  • Commitment to conduct research and scholarship consistent with a faculty appointment; commitment to engage in continuing professional development.
  • Ability to meet the requirements for tenure and promotion.

Preferred:

  • Additional masters or doctoral degree.
  • Professional track record with peer reviewed publication and national service.
  • Experience supervising faculty.
  • Experience participating in beta and pilot programs.
  • Experience using emerging library technologies.
