TITLE: Women in Tech Research Analyst

Goal: Improve discoverability and access to research into Women in Technology, promote awareness or research, identify research gaps, and engage with thought leaders.

Hours: 10-15 hours per week, one semester

Salary: $18-25/hour

Organization Description:

The Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS) and the Banatao Institute create information technology solutions for society’s most pressing challenges. The Women in Tech Initiative at UC (founded by CITRIS and the UC Berkeley College of Engineering) strives to promote the equitable participation, persistence, and success of women in technical fields. We leverage UC’s renowned research capabilities across four campuses to develop metrics and data insights to inform effective best practices that improve inclusion. We foster the success of women’s participation in tech through new pathways, leadership skills, and a powerfully supportive network.

Job Description: WITI aims to improve development and discoverability of women-in-tech specific metrics, research, and data. The goal is to advance knowledge, inform best practices, and advocate for policies and practices that ensure equitable opportunities for women in technical fields.

Social science and business research into the pipeline, participation, persistence, and success of women in technical fields has been growing. In this role, the research analyst role will:

  • Discover, curate, and distill key data points from research into a searchable database or alternate solution to aid discovery and use of existing data
  • Research and/or develop and survey for tech companies on whether they track relevant metrics and offer programs consistent with supporting a diverse workplace
  • Map the landscape of current solutions, best practices, and interventions that aid tech companies, VCs, startups, research institutes, and labs in improving equity, inclusion, and belonging in the workplace for women.
  • Share information, data, and trends through blog and social media
  • Help promote access to and use of the research through outreach and collaboration with students, departments, corporate partners, advisors, and allies.
  • This role may expand to include designing new research, developing curriculum or training modules, or pursuing research grants. The research analyst is encouraged to come up with their own impactful and measurable ways of fostering relevant research.
  • Valuable Skills and Experience:
  • Passion for improving the equitable participation, persistence, and success of women in technical fields
  • Strong research and analytical skills, ability to distill complex research
  • Comfortable with data, data visualization, databases (Airtable, Wordpress a plus)
  • Independent worker, comfortable initiating outreach and problem solving
  • Strong writing and communication skills; Public speaking experience is a bonus

Advanced undergraduate or graduate student preferred. Male/female/nonbinary allies/advocates and people traditionally under-represented in technology fields are strongly encouraged to apply.
