The drainage capability of a location is particularly important in storms like Harvey whose main hazard is rain rather than wind. Such storms are only likely to become more common on account of climate change as warmer oceans increase precipitation in storm systems. Statistical models used to create the FEMA flood maps do not consider land use, which significantly affect these flood risks. To complement FEMA flood maps (and other flood risk sources), we have created a web tool on top of Google Earth Engine to assess the drainage efficiency in the area of any property within the US.
