Project HOME: Modeling and Mapping Eviction rates in California
Hundreds of thousands of renters are evicted from their homes in California each year. During the COVID-19 pandemic a rent moratorium was put in place, but the effects of lifting such a moratorium were and continue to be unknown due to a lack of clean, accessible data on eviction rates in California. Project HOME worked with the renowned UC Berkeley Displacement project to source validated eviction data on 16 metros nationwide. We utilize cutting-edge machine learning techniques to constructed a model to generate predictions for eviction rates on California census tracts and construct a user-friendly interactive map that enables policymakers and the public to be able to visualize eviction rates in CA census tracts. The team at Project HOME seeks to add to the ongoing work that activists and grassroots organizations do to fight for tenant rights and keep folks not only housed, but home.
