LawNavigator: Your AI-Powered Local Law Guide
Access to local laws is crucial for various reasons. First, legal awareness is important as citizens are expected to follow these laws but often lack a practical way to learn about them, which can lead to unintentional violations. Additionally, researchers and policymakers need tools to compare laws across jurisdictions to inform policy developments and foster a consistent legal landscape. Finally, certain laws are highly specific to particular locations making them even harder to track and navigate.
Our project addresses a significant gap in public policy and governance: the lack of a unified, accessible resource for understanding these local laws in the United States. With over 3000 counties, local laws in the United States are often fragmented, hard to locate, and stored in many different formats, making it difficult for residents, legal professionals and policymakers to access them. Our project aims to create a comprehensive dataset of local laws and develop a model that users can query on and make sense of this data efficiently.
